My second Garmin. I use this to find reefs in the Fla Keys, with its preloaded maps, it shows almost all the reefs and wrecks. I've used this at night as well, and when it showed a channel marker it was right on the money. Very important for night navigation(lol). I would definitely recommend this product. I use this at least 2 times a month year round in south Florida, and usually go about 15 miles or so offshore every time. I previously had the Garmin 431s, but for a few extra bucks, the 441s has the offshore maps preloaded. Good luck

If you are looking for a compact, user friendly GPS Chartplotter/Sounder; buy this one. Garmin is the best, most fairly priced plotter/sounders available. My only regret was not buying the 541s. That 1 inch make a difference. I've been on the water ny whole life and for the money the 441s and 541s are the best plotters available. Amazon has the best prices on them too. WOuld have recieved 5 stars but add and tech infor doesn't state how long the transducer wire is. I took a chance and it fit with some room to spare. Transducer wire is 25-30 ft long. I also recommend buying the transducer with speed and water temp.

I purchased the Garmin 536s inland waterway version chartplotter specifically for the routing capability using the accessory Inland Lakes Vision Southeast SD map chip. Being new to this region of the country and being an experienced GPS user I wanted a good marine GPS to help get us familiar with the waterways here. We just completed a 420 mile trip on the Tennessee River system including navigating through three locks. The 536s delivered in spades on this trip giving us a pink route line showing an actual route on it's screen wherever we needed it. We did not need to consult our paper navigation charts once on this entire trip for any reason, the 536S has more information available then the paper navigation charts have. All you need to do with this GPS to get a route is enter a starting and ending point for your route, this GPS will then plot an actual in-channel route for you (not straight lines between waypoints which I find to be very cumbersome on lakes & rivers). Screen brightness in direct sunlight is excellent and although the screen is only 5" diagonal I found it to be very adequate. I have not hooked up the sonar part of this GPS yet. As far as I'm concerned the Garmin 536s is a home run.

I purchased this in August 2010 excellent delivery time, The 898cSI is great sonar unit wished I had purchased earlier. My one recomendation would be to study the manual and fimilarize your self with settings and operation in the simulation mode this will save you lots of time on the water. Don't forget to register with Hummingbird I received my unit and there were updates already available which I updated as soon as I installed the unit. Make sure to reset defaults before and after updates are installed.

I got my Garmin 78sc in 2010, to use not only on the water (Chesapeake Bay), but for hiking and geocaching. By now (2010) I've sailed for 3 days,(about 15 hours total run-time), and the alkaline batteries are about half gone according to the meter, so I'm fairly satisfied with the battery life. I haven't tried NiMH rechargeables yet.

I was concerned the unit was going to be huge (it's intentionally large to give internal air space for water flotation ability), but it's not too big or heavy. It was smaller than I was expecting it to be. Also, having the buttons on top of the screen are a little weird, but it's not a big issue in use. It's very fast in finding the satellites and switching display screens, etc. The built in electronic compass (multi-axis)calibrates quickly, and reacts quickly to movement, but seems very accurate. There is an option to have the map orient to either the compass heading (direction you point the GPS) or from the track (direction you were moving in is oriented "up").

Installation was was a breeze and the touch screen is a plus. It is very user friendly. The large screen is another positive feature.The processor they chose to use for this device is adequate at best. I would not classify it as "terribly slow" but it's certainly not particularly fast, either. Granted, the unit is doing a lot of work with the sat feeds, image overlays, SONAR, RADAR, etc...

Again, it's not painfully slow switching between the screens but it's not as fast as I'd like after spending $5 Large on the newest GPS Chart plotter (and SONAR/XM units that go with it) out there!

The hardware is put together very very well and is indeed waterproof to IPX7 standards (don't ask how I know this. It's embarrassing :D
